Computer consultants, and technicians have no legal obligations in most areas. This is unlike any other professional service to the public. Electricians, Doctors, Nurses, Real Estate Agents and many other professional services have various regulations to which they must comply and boards to whom they are held accountable.
When it comes to computer services the adage "Buyer Beware" is all that protects consumers. Consumers should be aware that any one can identify themselves as a computer technician, computer engineer or similar title. There is no state agency that regulates people working in information technology.
The reason I have this on my website is to illustrate my passion for educating my clients. I believe informed clients are in a better position to accurately evaluate my services and they are better equipped to find qualified technical help in the future. But most of all informed consumers make better purchasing decisions, and I am a well qualified, trained, professional computer consultant committed to forming a professional relationship with my clients and delivering to them services that exceed their expectations, meet their requirements and provide them value.
Here are something KWB Tech will never do:
1. I do not use pirated software.
Why not? Doesn't it save your clients money? No, it does not save money, not when you add in the maintenance head aches that go along with it. It is far better to pay full price for quality software with a legitimate license and avoid the back doors, trojans and virus that come bundled from pirates.
But the biggest reason I won't use pirated, stolen software is the people who create the software are entitled to a return on their labor. Doesn't every one want to get paid? I do and I don't want people stealing my work and reselling it without paying me, so I don't do that to others.
There are a number of open source, public licensed products out there that are free. Why not use them and avoid the hassles and bad karma of stealing software.
2. I will not disclose confidential information I may see when working on your computers or networks.
I will however report evidence of crimes, including but not limited to child pornography. Your business information is your business and any computer professional should have a confidentiality agreement with you. As a professional computer consultant my work exposes me to sensitive information about my clients and their work. I have a standing policy of guarding the privacy of that kind of information, mail lists, businesses proposals and similar things.
Criminal things are a different matter. If I come accross evidence on a computer that indicates a crime is occurring, child pornography is a crime, I will report that to and assist law enforcement. I will not become an accessory to a crime.
